What is half-stitch?
A half-stitch is a simple sewing technique that involves sewing one thread through two layers of fabric, leaving a small gap between the two layers. This gap allows for the fabric to move freely, which can be useful for sewing on elastic or stretchy materials.
To perform a half-stitch, start by placing the needle through both layers of fabric and pulling it back through the first layer. Then, pull the thread through the second layer and back through the first, forming a loop around the needle. Finally, pull the loop tight and secure it with a stitch or knot.
Half-stitches are often used in sewing projects that require flexibility or movement, such as sewing on elastic, adding ruffles or piping, or attaching a zipper. They can also be used to create decorative effects, such as fringe or chain stitching.
